The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron is the original book on the subject of creativity. It is not simply a workbook for "visual artists"; it is a resource for everyone who wishes to be more creative in their lives and endeavors.

Course Description:

The Artist Way material is divided into a twelve-week course (we cover one chapter each week), with assignments much like any semester-long college class. The main assignments are deceptively simple, but require commitment. Each chapter is devoted to a particular aspect of recovering the inner artist. They discuss some of the pitfalls and problems of the creative process and provide exercises designed to stimulate your creativity and sense of self.

Assignments:

*The first daily assignment is the Morning Pages. These are three pages of longhand free association writing, commonly known as journaling. It doesn't matter what you write, as long as you fill those pages.  This will be an important commitment to yourself for 12 weeks.

*One weekly assignment is the Artist Date. Spend an hour to two hours each week doing something for you -- alone. This is tougher than it appears. It's easy to let everything else get in the way of this weekly date, but it is very important.

*The other weekly assignment is to read the chapter and do the homework at the end of each chapter.  These simple exercises usually take about an hour.

Weekly Class :

The class will meet at the AIM studio. Each session will be divided into 3 segments - 30 minutes to recap the last week's activities and share insights and inspirations, 30 minutes to introduce the new chapter, and 30 minutes in creative pursuit.

The Artist's Way is an empowering book for aspiring and working artists. The book is unique in three ways:

*It links creativity to spirituality by showing in non-denominational terms how to tap into the higher power that connects human creativity with the creative energies of the universe.

*It links creativity to personal empowerment and in each of the twelve weeks of the course helps remove one or more barriers to confidence and productivity.

*It links creativity to learnable skills, guiding you through a variety of highly effective exercises and activities that spur imagination and create new ideas and a new perspective.

I know from personal experience how life changing this study can be. The Art Institute of McKinney is a direct result of my participation the Artist Way course.

The Artist's Way is available at local bookstores (Barnes & Noble, etc.), on Amazon.com, and at Half-Price Books.  I will be ordering several, so if you need me to get one for you, please let me know early.
